On a broad scale, structures of the Columbia Plateau occur in a region that is influenced tectonically by oblique subduction and by right-lateral shear between the Pacific and North American plates. The region is characterized by northward-decreasing Basin and Range style extension which implies right-lateral shear on northwest trending structures.
