Program History
Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity,
International is a professional service organization composed of pre-law
students, law students, legal educators, attorneys, judges, and government
officials. Phi Alpha Delta was founded in 1902 for the purpose for promoting
professional competency and achievement within the legal profession.
Since the beginning, Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) has experienced
astounding growth and today is the world's largest law fraternity with over 200
pre-law chapters, over 180 law school chapters and over 90 alumni chapters in
the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.
The PAD Pre-Law Program was established in 1980 and during
the past 20 years has reached a position of preeminence at colleges and
universities across the United States and Puerto Rico. Membership in Phi Alpha
Delta launches you into an elite group whose members include past Presidents,
Senators, and other important community figures.
PAD was the first organization to recognize
the importance of uniting all members of the legal profession, thereby becoming
the first to remove all restrictions on membership by reason of race, sex,
color, creed, or nation of origin.
PAD is the first and only law fraternity to recognize the
needs of pre-law students and develop a program to help them as they pursue a
career in the law.
In addition, PAD is the first and only law fraternity to
sponsor an Annual International Conference and a Mock Trial Competition
specifically addressing the needs of pre-law students.
PAD is the only law fraternity to receive federal funding
from the U.S. Department of Justice for its Law Related Education program and
the first law fraternity to enter the information superhighway. The PAD Pre-Law
Listserve provides a forum for pre-law students to discuss legal topics,
programming ideas and chapter events.
The PAD Web Page provides access to a variety of information
on the fraternity and its officers, as well as links to other web pages
containing valuable information for students.
