The 1974 models were the end of the line for the full-size Ambassador after a 42-year run under the Nash, Rambler, and AMC nameplates.

For 1974, the Ambassador sedan was stretched seven inches compared with the 1973 versions. In part this was because of the new energy absorbing bumpers as well as the new front end design. Other increases for 1974 included a larger capacity fuel tank (24.9 gallons) and alternator -- now producing 62 amps. Last but not least, the dash was redesigned and new sound insulation made the car much quieter.

All Ambassador models in 1974 came with numerous practical, appearance, and comfort items as standard equipment -- from automatic transmission and air conditioning to belted white wall tires! Modern steel radial type tires were optional on most vehicles produced in the USA during the mid-1970s.

Options: 360 cubic inch 2-bbl V-8 engine, Cruise Command Speed control, AM/FM stereo radio, Protection Group, FR78x14 white wall radial tires, finished in Dark Blue (F7) with standard blue fabric bench interior (Trim T-473A).

Note: This very elegant four door sedan was purchased from Courtesy AMC/Jeep by the Energy Attaché stationed with the Embassy of Poland in Washington, DC.

Ambassador road test as reported in:

On the road

The 401 cubic inch engine is the most powerful that can be put into an American Motors car and it runs quietly, smoothly and is completely vibration-free, rare qualities in all anti-pollution engines. When you press the accelerator, the engine immediately springs to life and there is lots of power available at low revs. Taking off from a standing start, we ran the car up to 60 MPH in 11.4 seconds. and continued on until we were over 110 MPH. We recorded gas consumption at a very good 14.1 miles per gallon. This is gas mileage more likely to be expected with an intermediate car.

The automatic transmission, built by Chrysler, harmonizes with the engine's performance and the gear changes are nicely spaced and change quickly without hesitation. When it comes to passing, the performance of the Ambassador is certainly a worthwhile safety feature.

For a while now, American Motors cars haven't been noted for their roadholding and indeed have been worse than the average. Fortunately, this is not the case with the '74 Ambassador because in 1969 A.M. began using a new chassis that has brought improvement in the roadholding department every year. The Ambassador corners without a flap although the car was fitted with bias-belted regular tires. We think better tires could be found for the car, however after scanning the accessory list we found that radial tires can be had as an option. The stabilizer bar fitted to the front suspension stops the car from rolling too far in corners, although the suspension travel is long enough to absorb most of the bumps on the road. The body is really solid and quiet as a whisper.

1974 AMC Ambassador Brougham

21,000 miles -- 2 Owners

Seller's Description:

I am the second owner on this original 1974 AMC Ambassador. Purchased in October 2005 from the 88 year old original owner. Car has DOCUMENTED 21,000 original miles. Factory spare and jack never out of trunk. Original 1974 AMC window sticker comes with car. Original Connecticut title is also included.

Car has NO rot of any kind. A small amount of surface rust here and there around engine compartment. Car has never been hit or damaged. Car has been repainted once in 1986 as factory painted faded per the original owner. I have all the original mid-80s installed bias ply tires and steel wheels with caps. I have recently put a set of factory AMC aluminum wheels with gorgeous original AMC volcano caps with 4 new radials. Car has a long scratch on one quarter panel and some spider webbing of paint as it was painted in lacquer. Has some minor chips but the body is very very straight with NO dings or dents and still shines like a mirror. Vinyl top looks perfect as well as the original interior including the headliner, seats and floor panels. This car runs and drives like new. Motor is perfect!!

Here are details:

Car has 21,000 original miles and is 100% factory original except for one (1) repaint.

Factory air conditioning, factory rear stabilizer bar, factory AM push button radio, Custom cloth interior, floor mats.

Automatic transmission fluid and filter change, total carburetor rebuilt, AMC fuel filter, Filler neck to gas tank hose. I have spent a ton of $$$ since I picked up the car last October. Car had been sitting in a garage and not been started since 1998. I wanted a totally reliable running car and got it. I spared NO money!!

Beside having some scratches in the paint this car could be entered in any car show. A totally beautiful car. I have Original Connecticut title and current registration. I checked under the factory front seat cover and the front seat material matches the back seat material perfectly and is in mint condition.
