Dress professionally and conservatively. Avoid trendy clothing, flashy jewelry, colognes and heavy make-up. Generally a gray or navy business suit is appropriate.
Do your research, and when in doubt, err on the side of being conservative. While first impressions can't substitute for sound preparation, they are highly important. Decisions are often made in the first minute or so of an interview.
A conservative dark navy or gray skirted wool blend suit is standard job interviewing attire. Experts are split on their opinions of pants suits, so a skirted suit is a safer choice. Skirt length should be just below the knee-never shorter than above the knee. Blouses should be cotton or silk and white or some other light color. A dress is acceptable- usually a plain dark color. Shoes should be low-heeled.
Keep make-up to a minimum with lipstick and nail polish colors conservative. Pantyhose should be flawless-no runs. Wear skin toned hosiery. Tattoos should be covered.
A conservative dark navy or gray well two-piece business suit, a white long-sleeved button-down dress shirt, a conservative silk tie and polished dress shoes are the standard job interviewing attire. If you do not own a suit, or the company is a bit more informal, a conservative silk tie, and polished dress shoes are acceptable. Your belt should match your shoes. Beards and mustaches should be neatly trimmed. if you have any visible body parts pierced, most experts recommend removing all jewelry, including earrings. Tattoos should be covered. Always button your suit jacket when you stand. This presents a better look. Always wear socks that cover your calves. Wear undershirts under your dress shirt.
For both women and men: Schedule regular haircuts; Make sure your clothes are pressed; and keep an extra business outfit at work for emergencies.
Just as you have invested time and money in your education and your resume, your appearance for an interview requires an investment. Fifty-five percent of another person's perception of you is based on how you look. Remember to dress for the position you want not the position you have.
