      02-19-14 Faculty Position/Coordinator of Extended Campus MSW Program

      The West Virginia University School of Social work seeks self-motivated leadership to coordinate its off-campus MSW program offered in Martinsburg, WV. The position is full-time at the rank of either Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Instructor depending on qualifications. The position includes a combination of teaching, administrative service and project development to advance the mission of the School of Social Work with particular emphasis on the needs of north-eastern WV. This positions in non-tenure track but is eligible for promotion. Promotion to senior ranks, however, is not a requirement for institutional commitment and career stability.

      Successful candidates must have an MSW degree from a CSWE-accredited program, and at least three years post-MSW practice experience. appointment at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor required a Ph.D. or DSW degree. Candidates will be evaluated on evidence of teaching effectiveness in social work or related field; knowledge of reaccreditation standards of the Council on Social Work Education; understanding of social work practice in rural and urban environments; ability to build relationships among various constituencies in the community; and administrative skill. Interest in developing projects in collaboration with state and national agencies, the state and national legislature, and the West Virginia Chapter and Washington D.C. chapter of NASW is an important aspect of this position.

      This is a 9-month appointment with supplementary summer support depending on program coordination duties, teaching, advising, field liaison assignments and/or demands of project development. Preferred starting date is June 2014. The successful candidate will teach primarily in Martinsburg, but may also be expected to teach in other MSW program sites depending on expertise of the candidate and program needs. Teaching expectations will require the use of distance technologies including asynchronous on-line teaching. The Coordinator will attend monthly faculty meetings on the Morgantown campus and participate as a member of the MSW Program Committee and MSW Admissions and Retention Committee.

      The Youth Development Center works with children who have been termed status offenders (status offenders are things such as truancy, behavior problems, breaking of school policies, etc.). We are located in Aiken, SC at a 400-acre camp which features canoeing, camping, low and high adventure courses, and many recreation sites. the program will work with a maximum of 32 students at a time. The program utilizes a 12-week cycle of seven-day educational and recreational modules. Participants can enter at the beginning of any module and complete a full 12-week cycle. these modules focus on: environmental science, technology, aerospace, food and nutrition, horticulture, health, marine science, electricity, zoology, physical science, high adventure, and mechanical science. the primary educational goals for the program are: behavior modification, improve study skills, and create a passion for learning. Staff will have great work schedules, and there will be many chances to pick up trainings and add to an instructor's knowledge.

      Principle Duties: Scheduling, supervising, and coordinating juvenile activities at the center. Provide teaching, crisis intervention, and orientation of new juveniles, and serves as a treatment team member. Perform administrative duties and activities of volunteers; make community contacts as needed. Provides or arranges transportation services to ensure the needed services are available and provided. Supervises sanitation and maintenance procedures to ensure cleanliness and orderliness of the facility and the general health and safety of the residents. Residential duties on certain nights. Monitors safety and security procedures for the facility.

      Qualifications: BA or BS in Social Work, Psychology, Social Science or other related subjects is preferred. Experience working with at-risk students preferred (behavior or other). Must have the patience, understanding, flexibility, and a lot of energy. Must demonstrate teaching skills and the ability to implement creative "hands-on" teaching methods. Must be willing to sacrifice, adapt, and work hard as part of a team pursuing an objective. Must be physically able to perform the tasks required to teach outdoors.

      Martinsburg - this team is working to create a grass-roots movement within a 40-block low income section of the city that will change the odds for the children who live there. The focus of the Promise Neighborhood Initiative is to increase participation in early intervention services for children 0-4 years old and to connect families to supportive resources. There will be opportunities to participate in community organizing, research, and state-wide networking for community development and civic engagement.

      Chester - Identify and prioritize abandoned industrial brown fields sites for cleanup and re-use. This requires extensive civic engagement and the development of a community vision for its economic future as the team and the community moves to implement its plans.

      Clay - Developing a countrywide plan and campaign to expand the facilities at the county park, with the goal of moving the county 4-H camp there, as well as a wide variety of other activities. The current top priority is a large dining/multipurpose building.

      Wayne County - This CCT is planning and implementing tourism-related projects that will leverage the opportunities expected to come with the proposed lodge and conference center at Beech Fork State Park. These include an extensive trail system, arts and crafts businesses, an expanded local food system, a variety of active outdoor recreation opportunities and more. This initiative has recently added some work on assuring that the bond issue for the facility mores forward in the face of some technical glitches and a challenging state economy.

      AmeriCorps VISTA is open to U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents age 18 and older. During their service, VISTAs receive an $11,136 per year living allowance, as well as health care, child care, training, relocation expenses, and liability insurance. After a successful year of service, VISTAs receive either a $1,500 stipend or a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award equal to the maximum amount of the federal Pell Grant. The award can be used to pay for educational expenses at qualified institutions of higher education, or to pay back qualified student loans.
