Volunteers are trained to locate and assess the problems and issues affecting our clients and decide whether those issues require speaking with one of our attorneys, or if it can be handled by providing the client with information directly. Service members often handle their own cases, including sending attorney approved advice letters on issues ranging from divorce, motor vehicle issues, child custody, bankruptcy, and a range of other issues. If Legal Aid cannot help the caller, then the service member is trained to find someone who can, be it the Attorney General's office, the Public Service Commission, or some other group or agency.
Service members spend about half their time on the phone directly assisting clients. The other half of their time is spend on their individual service project, assisting attorneys with cases, or shadowing attorneys or paralegals at court hearings and performing other legal work. An exampled of a past service project that is ongoing today is the Lawyer Information Service, during which private attorneys donate time every Tuesday night to answer legal questions from the public free of charge, to providing education to the public or other professionals through coordinating presentations.
This position is an excellent opportunity to serve low income West Virginians and gain valuable experience that looks great on any professional school application. Past volunteers have gone onto a career in law and law school.
Benefits include health insurance, $5,500 education award upon completion of the year of service, and a modest living stipend for the year.
